Watering and sprinkling

Watering and sprinkling

Proper watering, that is, providing the right amount of water, is one of the most important treatments in the cultivation of ornamental plants. Minor negligence in this area may result in irreparable losses. Watering is also one of the more difficult activities, as not all plants require equal amounts of water. For example, large plants, soft leaves should be watered more abundantly than plants with narrow or leathery leaves. Plants from subtropics also need a lot of water. Water demand depends not only on the structure of the plant, but also from the period of its development; young plants evaporate more water than older plants, so they need to be watered more. Plants also need more water just before flowering than after flowering. The abundance of watering also depends on the temperature. In hot weather, you need to supply much more water than on cool spring or autumn days.

Watering plants in a greenhouse is of great importance, because greenhouse plants have more delicate tissues, which causes more evaporation. The amount of water supplied depends on the type of plants and the period of their development, and also on the temperature of the greenhouse; water less abundantly in cool greenhouses than in warm greenhouses. Watering must be limited, when the plants have a dormant period.

Flooding plants is no less harmful than drying them out, i.e.. supplying more water, than they can use, because the roots are then deprived of air and die, and the plants die soon.

It is easy to see about the necessity of watering, by touching the ground moisture; if we find, that the earth has dried up more than 1-2 cm, watering should not be delayed. When growing plants that require a very humid environment, do not even allow the top layer to dry out. When growing potted plants, it is necessary to water up to, to some extent inform the sound, what the flowerpot seems to be, when he taps it with his bent finger; so if the soil in it is dry, the sound is clear, louder, if it is wet, deaf, as if muffled.

Plants are watered with hydrants, sprinklers or watering cans. It is best to do this in the morning and in the early morning hours. The water temperature does not matter for most plants, and thus the accumulation of water in reservoirs, for it to "stick out" and warm it up is not necessary; some greenhouse plants, however, are sensitive to low water temperatures and then better, when it is slightly close to the temperature in the greenhouse.

Be careful when watering flowering plants, so as not to spray heavily on the flowers, as this can damage the petals, thus adversely affect their appearance.

Greenhouse plants from tropical forests, constantly wet, they need not only abundant watering and sprinkling, but also a large amount of water vapor in the air. To provide them with appropriate conditions, one should therefore spray water in the greenhouse with nebulizers or water it, several times a day, pavements and heating pipes.
