Apple tree cultivation and care

Later maturing from the above-described is Red Wealthy. It is an American variety, new in Poland, because so far a variety with greenish-yellow fruits has been planted, partially covered with a strong blush. Her mutant, named Red, bears fruit that is completely red. White flesh, pink under the skin, delicate, juicy, słodkawo-kwaskowaty, aromatic, very tasty. The fruits reach maturity for harvest in mid-September. It starts bearing fruit very early, because already in the third year after planting. This variety bears fruit very abundantly and requires thinning of the buds, otherwise the fruit grows too small. The trees grow moderately fast, forming a loose crown of average size. The apical branches grow at an acute angle and therefore must be removed before lignification. The variety is very resistant to frost and diseases.

A new variety bred in Poland is Delikates. It is perfect for small gardens due to early and abundant fruiting and high disease resistance. The trees grow moderately fast. It is recommended to vaccinate on rootstock M 26 or M 7 i wstawce B 9 or P 2. The apples are medium in size, greenish-yellow with a blurred blush, very tasty. They ripen in early September.

The old German variety ripens later – Prince Albrecht of Prussia, highly valued for its early fruiting (w 3-4 one year after planting). The tree grows moderately fast in youth, later weak. The crown is spherical, sometimes flattened, loose, with thick stems and stiff twigs. It bears fruit very profusely, with a tendency to alternate fruiting. It is completely resistant to frost, also resistant to mildew and scab. It produces medium-sized or large fruit, spherical, slightly flattened, slightly tapering towards the calyx. Smooth leather, greenish yellow, with strong, a fuzzy and striped blush. Broad stripes, intermittent, dark carmine. Greenish-white flesh, medium grainy, sour, aromatic. The fruit is suitable for consumption from October to December. They store well and are useful for preserves.

A close relative of the very tasty and popular Mclntosh variety, which, however, is not recommended for amateur cultivation, is Spartan – Canadian variety resistant to diseases. The tree grows vigorously, initially creates a lofty crown, quite dense, later spherical, with thick and stiff branches. It starts bearing fruit very early (w 3-4 one year after planting), it bears fruit abundantly, in good conditions annually. When it bears fruit too much, you need to thin the twigs. It is sufficiently resistant to frost. It produces medium-sized fruit, often minor, spherical-conical or spherical, slightly flattened, slightly ribbed, regular. Smooth skin, shiny, almost completely covered with dark red, usually a fuzzy blush and a strong one, light blue coating. Greenish-white flesh, sour-sweet, medium grainy, aromatic. The fruits ripen in mid or late September. They can be eaten from December.

A later variation, ripening in mid-October, is Idared. It is an American variety that gains supporters due to its low requirements. The trees grow poorly, form a small or medium-sized crown, spherical, dense, with numerous hanging twigs, covered with shoots. It starts bearing fruit in the second or third year after planting. It bears fruit regularly and very profusely. Due to the poor growth, planted trees can be grafted even on Antonówka. Not very resistant to frost, quite resistant to scab, but succumbs to mildew. In her youth, she is prone to gangrene of the bark. It even works on lighter soils. It produces medium-sized fruit, most often spherical, sometimes barrel-shaped, flattened at the stalk and calyx, slightly ribbed, heavy. Strong skin, to the group, very shiny, light yellow with a slight greenish tinge, dying as the fruit ripens, covered with very intense, fuzzy, vivid red blush with few stripes and streaks. They keep well even until June. They taste best in April and May.
